My 4e campaign

Given that 4e is WoW, it needs long story arcs, recurring bad guys, heroism and action.

So. I'd use the low levels to establish the characters' stories. I wouldn't go too much into it but I'd certainly explore the things for which they care. So families, institutions, religion. Checking out the Keep on the Borderlands is fine but I think it's a bit far away. I'd start with something urban. Perhaps bandits have been attacking caravans. Some of the stolen goods have been turning up for sale in the city anyway. I mean, you've got to sell the stuff somewhere.

So the first adventure allows the character to explore the seedy underbelly of the city and get some ideas of the powers and players.

Oh, isn't that just Freeport ...

I agree.

I personallly prefer urban enviroments to play a character in low-level S&S fantasy adventures.

But I beleive that any enviroment that affords characters the chance to develop skills that will serve them later on as well as some sort of support syetem works just as well.

You could always do it in an underground city, perhaps with another, abandoned complex beneath ...

And this from the man who put subterranean secret passages in Venice. But yeah, touché. My fantasy tropes are limited.

Actually, the last fantasy game I ran with GURPS 4e didn't have any underground stuff in it. It was about finding the lineage of someone who'd made a pact with the devil. It was supposed to be Cthulhu Dark Ages.

Did not. The island with the cellar was somewhere else in the lagoon.

I used extensive catacombs under my designed game fanatasy city.

It was inspired by 'The Pit' in the Conean story 'The Road of Kings'.

But I had some of my 'underground' populated by predatory undead so as not too make things too easy for tea leaves (& the players:D).
