More than one word meme

Right. All that one word stuff is a bit dull so how about a nice story.

It was raining in the City. A cold hard rain, but not enough to wash the scum from the streets. Fortunately for me, I could still afford an office and something to keep me warm, and even a glass to drink it in. Stuck up here on the 6th floor it was pretty peaceful. Someone had been in to water the flowers that morning but I hadn't seen anyone else since. And I was hoping to keep it that way until Spring. That's when ...

That's when... the power died. Suddenly my whole office was plunged into darkness. Through the window I could see a wave of blackness sweeping over the city as the lights flickered and died. The streets below fell still as the vehicles slowed and halted, the headlamps dimmed and them blackened. I stood there, staring out at the chaos, my glass in my hand, wondering what could have caused such a disaster. And then...

the sirens started. not the burglar alarms i had expected, nor the cacophony of car alarms that accompany blackouts in movies. They sounded like air raid sirens, but i knew from my job that these weren't leftover sirens from the forties. These were new. more strident than the faux sirens from the fifties public safety films. Then I saw..
