Top Eight

Comment with the words "Top Ten" or "Top Five", and I will reply with a subject for which you will generate a top ten (or top five) list. Post the list and instructions in your own journal...

Top Eight non-Lovecraft Cthulhu Mythos stories. It was supposed to be ten but some of my books are in the attic and so I only managed eight favourites. The first two are available on line. I suppose a few are not strictly Cthulhu Mythos, but they do have the Mythos Ethos.

A Colder War - Charles Stross
The Cold War meets the Mythos head-on
A Study in Emerald - Neil Gaiman
Holmes' London as it never was
The Courtyard - Alan Moore
    Grimy and grim, with drugs.
The Willows - Algernon Blackwood
Otherworldly interactions on an island in the Danube.
Suicide Watch - Arinn Dembo (Dark Theatres)
    Nirvana as Mythos.
The Yellow Sign - Robert Chambers
    Lugubrious and creepy.
Cold Print - Ramsey Campbell
A warning on second hand bookshops.
The Tsalal - Thomas Ligotti
An occult cult does what it must

OK, then, top five. Or top ten. Whichever.

Good call on The Yellow Sign. I've got the Chaosium Chambers anthology and rather enjoyed it. What did you think of The Maker of Moons?

Top 10 words that we don't have in English but should.

The Maker of Moons is strange as is much of Chambers. balbinus' favourite, the Repairer of Reputations is stranger still. It's hard to say if the narrator is reliable.

Moons though, seems to be a story of the yellow peril but as such is of its time.

And for that I require a top ten of different Bunter plot structures - if you can find that many!
