Champagne or children?

According to today's Guardian it costs £738 a month to raise a child from the age of 0 to 21 (and an extra £290 a month if you send them to private school).

Cristal Champagne costs about £100 a bottle so you can have 7 a month (or 10 if you would have sent your kid to private school) per child.

So instead of having 2 children, we could have a bottle of Cristal every other day.

Kyle costs considerably less than £738 a month! I suspect that some months we're in profit, what with working families tax credit and child benefit.

Well it is an average. That's about £24 a day. Some people might easily spend that on child care.

Don't forget the chimney-sweeping.

I don't really count his earnings from chimney-sweeping, as that just goes straight to the gin merchant to keep us topped up...

Have either of you stopped work? This may well factor into the occasion; my elder daughter is the more expensive of our two children since she goes to nursery three afternoons per week (£150 per month) and obviously there are food, clothing, insurance (me and the house, not them) and entertainment costs on top of that but neither child costs £738 in direct expenditure.

However, my wife gave up her job and now works part-time for the Open University and teaching from home - if lost wages are factored in, the cost rises hugely.

We both work from home, handily enough, so are still able to work.

That's so bling...
...says the guy who opened a magnum of vintage C for his 40th. (But in my defence, we laid it down before it became super-bling)

Yeh, but that's entry-level Crystal.

Besides (and having tried this at a blind tasting), it really only works by itself. There are far nicer to drink with food....
