Hellboy II

Looked marvellous, great set pieces, too schmalzy in places, plot not very good. B+

I thought Abe got too sentimental and Johann was too autorcratic, but they're still good characters if not quite a written. But that's Hollywood demanding more simple motives I guess.

If Nuala challenged Nuada for the crown, he wouldn't be able to kill her without dying himself and so could never claim control of the golden army. Wouldn't this have been a happy ending?

Elves, they is dumb. Actually Nuada had the kind of honour that would have demanded he fought his sister anyway.

Of course it's also possibly just good old fashioned sexism. Only a King can control the Golden Army not some weedy girl with strange taste in fish men.

Yeah, her challenging him and he kills her and in so doing kills himself, or even she kills him or gets Abe to kill her, any of these would have made a better ending.

I thought Abe giving over the piece of the crown was too easy. They hadn't developed the relationship to such a point where doing that would seem a reasonable thing for him to do. He needed to be more obviously infatuated.

It's one of those nearly films that with a bit more thought could have been great.

I was waiting for this also, maybe after Abe got a good smashing from the golden dudes.

Of course, Nuada wouldn't have to kill her (necessarily), just defeat her. So not such a happy ending.

It seemed like the "Hellboy can challenge, because he's the son of .. .. well OK let's fight" was a bit edited. Or just didn't make sense. Player of Hellboy says "Hey, I challenge him!" and GM says "Err.. OK."

Thanks for the positive review. I've been dreading being dragged to the cinema by my reading group to see both of them.
