Support the BBC!

It's got a budget of millions and not a few staff, it's the premier news organisation in the world, on TV, on the radio and on-line. It's reputation is second to none as a collector and disseminator of unbiased reporting and yet it is more and more under threat.

Why's that?

Precisely for the reasons stated above. Support the BBC, don't let anyone take it away from you!

All the crap aimed at it at the moment is small fry designed to undermine an august and worthy institution. Support the BBC!

One of the problems of supporting the BBC, which I do, is that it sends out rather mixed messages about what it supports. That makes it hard to know what you are supporting when you support it. I'm not impressed by the way it buckled under pressure during the stupid tabloid powered Andrew Sachs problem. I'm not impressed that almost fired Russel Brand for one of the exact same reasons that it hired him. Neither am I impressed that the coverage of the arts on BBC1 and BBC2 is pitiful in comparisson to it's superb radio output. I totally support what the BBC ought to be, but I don't admire it's lack of guts.

I think though that its inconsistency and non-idealness is part of what we ought to support. If it stuck firmly to one set of agenda and one defined vision of what it was supposed to be and how it was supposed to act, it wouldn't be nearly as culturally useful. Sometimes I agree with its decisions and plans, and often I don't, but then the same is true for everyone else. If I always agreed with it, I'd be worried.
