Tea-drinker par excellence

Is who bovvered?

It sounds like I'm in a minority but I really enjoyed Catherine Tate's turn as the Doctor's partner in crime in the Christmas special. I thought we got a bit of comedy, which is what you might expect, but as the programme went on, I think Tate turned in a solid performance and we got to see real character development.

The last two companions have been rather giddy and girlish and I think the Bride could be an interesting contrast.

I'm not worried about having Kylie in it either. I'm seeing her as some kind of Ice Queen villain, but maybe that's just me.

This ain't no stinking sci-fi

So I've just read The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It is apparently one of the most heartbreaking reads of this century. Which is fine, except that it reads like 1970s SF.

I was similarly underwhelmed by Oryx and Crake and that one about clones whose title I cannot recall.

McCarthy and Atwood are good writers although possibly too disengaged for me to really like them but their plundering of old sci-fi is nothing terribly new or exciting. And I've never got on with Lessing.

And then this from LeGuin (via Ansible). Stick it to them Ursula!

Alternatives to space suicide?

ESA have just run a competition to select a soundtrack for the International Space Station. This was the winning entry from 14 year old Therese from Norway:

Here Comes The Sun - Beatles
Come Fly With Me - Frank Sinatra
Rocket Man - Elton John
Up Where We Belong - Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes
Imagine - John Lennon
Flashdance - What A Feeling - Irene Cara
Walk of Life - Dire Straits
Fly - Celine Dion
Rockin' All Over The World - Status Quo
I Believe I Can Fly - R Kelly

I don't think I'd last the whole mix.

The most mentioned tracks were:
Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Imagine - John Lennon
Grace Kelly - Mika
What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
Girlfriend - Avril Lavigne

The competitors were all between 10 and 17 but I don't suppose any of the adult astronauts will thank them.

Here's the kind of thing they should have had:
Stairway To Heaven - Led Zeppelin , yeah well, it is Zep.
Space Oddity - Bowie
Rocket 88 - Warrior Soul
Love Missile F1-11 - Sigue Sigue Sputnik
Rocket - Smashing Pumpkins
Another Girl, Another Planet - Only Ones
Repo Man Theme Song - Iggy Pop
