Sheer Genius

Why haven't Clangers got pants asks Carol. Because they are Clangers says Dave. If you were a child in the early 70s the Clangers are part of who you are.

Enjoy the genius of Oliver Postgate who passed away yesterday. With Peter Firmin he founded Small Films that made many children's programmes.

We saw him once at the South Bank, giving a talk about Noggin the Nog, Pogles Wood, Ivor the Engine, Bagpuss and the Clangers. He was every bit as wonderful as his creations.

Didn't he do The Herbs as well?

No, that was written by Michael Bond (who wrote Paddington) and animated by Ivor Wood (who animated the Magic Roundabout in France).

You saw him at the South Bank? Would that have been at the NFT about ten years ago? When the NFT did a Postgate/Firmin day. If so then me and Sandra might have been sitting right behind you :-).

I didn't think it was that long ago but it was the NFT. He brought Bagpuss along and showed some really early films including the scary witch from the Pogles.

Here's a link. It was in 2001.

I found a clip on YouTube yesterday of the last bit of the last episode of the scary witch arc. The magical language in there is really quite rich and fantasy novel-ish.

Pogles is one of those things where I know it was around but I can't actually remember any of it, so that was quite interesting.

I was a total Pogles fan when I was about three. Anyone of a certain age remember the Pogle merchandising tie-in that was Pippin comic? I used to read my friend's copy and he read my Bimbo. Suddenly that sounds wrong...
