Digi broke

Our digital TV recorder with twin freeview tuners appears to be broken. It won't turn on any more. We got it from Morgans and we've had it for about two years which is a bit soon for what is basically a very stripped down PC. It's not as if we've been messing with the software.

We need at least two freeview tuners. The ability to play and record DVDs might be nice but it's not imperative.

Any recommendations for a replacement?

We got my mother a Humax PVR (from Richer Sounds) a couple of years ago, and she loves it. It will record 2 programs, and watch 1, provided you are not on more than 2 multiplexes.

The real question is whether you want any form of HDMI, even without HD (and freeview HD is not mainstream yet, and may never be). There are some boxes out there with upscaling, and playing a digital source through HDMI makes sense in any case.

What make was it? Our Thompson one, same sort of spec, died on us about a month ago which would have made it around 16 months old. Fortunately we had the old digibox (non-PVR) that it replaced and the clunky single channel Humax we have upstairs is still working fine.

I can't remember the make, I'm afraid.

The Humax was recommended to us last time but we got a cheaper one with similar spec from Morgan's which is now broke. It makes the £20 Argos 3 year guarantee look attractive because these things seem to have a high fail rate.

I know nothing of HDMI, or TV certainly isn't HD. Should I still care?

It was a bit obscure - Digifusion. Ours lasted about as long as yours, 17 months. And died with the last episode of Desparate Housewives on it, the swine! Thank goodness for C4 catchup online.

Have you tried shaking it really hard? Or possibly beating it against something?

Happy to lend you a multimeter and soldering iron, if you want to try fixing it? Maybe just a dry joint, loose connection, bit of dust sort of problem.

I've got a topfield that I really like, there's also a very active forum that can help with any problems that you have with it...

We went for the Humax. If anyone with a soldering iron or some explosives wants our old Digifusion, they're quite welcome to it.
