Pinned to the bed by an invisible monster

I've been off work with flu since Tuesday and running a temperature for much of that time. I've also mostly been sleeping in the back bedroom so I don't keep Paula awake with my tossing and turning, groaning and snoring.

Our back bedroom is not terribly welcoming. It's the coldest room in the house, the dark red blind stops just enough light to keep the room in permanent gloom and the double bed (a not inexpensive extending futon) is towered over on two sides by wardrobes and boxes (of roleplaying stuff) hidden under a dust-sheet.

So I woke up in the middle of the night, lying on my stomach, and my first thought, for whatever reason, was "at least I'm safe in here". At that very moment an eerie hissing started up, something like the sound of a TV tuned to a dead channel and I was pinned to the bed. I couldn't move any of my limbs, nor could I see what was holding me down. In any case, my eyes were shut tight. It was pretty scary, even though I was immediately aware that this was probably sleep paralysis. So I rocked my shoulders and as soon as I managed to work up some momentum I was free and could move again. So I just rolled on to my side and went back to sleep again.

And damned if it didn't happen twice again! I'd never had it before but three times in one night seems execessive. The second time was pretty much the same as the first, with the same creepy noise. The third time there was no noise but it started with the feeling of something pulling the duvet off me. When I was able to move again it was clear that the duvet was still there.

I'm still off today and no doubt I'll be sleeping in the same room again tonight. Hopefully with fewer monsters this time.
