The use of statistics

A spat between the Tories and the UK Statistics Authority has come to a head with this glorious piece of understatement:

"The BCS [British Crime Survey] suggests there has been a 49% fall in violent crime since 1995 - an unhelpful conclusion for politicians anxious to demonstrate that violence has 'risen significantly' under Labour."

I imagine that Fear of everything is at an all time high, except perhaps Chelsea being relegated.
