Ingrates

I watched the Argentina - Greece game last night and really enjoyed it. Greece packed men behind the ball, man-marked Argentina and left Samaras up front on his own. Samaras did a good job and had he been a slightly better striker the result would have been so different, given at least two very good chances. However Argentina's slightly shaky defence held out and Greece's strong organisation didn't last the full 90 minutes. But it was as good a tussle as I've seen in this cup and so I was surprised when the punters, including defender Hanson, said it was a boring game. Had they been watching the same game?

One can't help feeling that any plan relying on Samaras to score has some flaws...

There is that, but apart from not actually getting the ball in the net, he had a very good game. Although you might argue that scoring could be said to be his prime reason for being there. And he does have nice hair.

I was watching the other match, on the basis that as both teams were tryign to win, it would probably be more interesting. It certainly was interesting, although I guess only someone who dedicatredly watched both could say if I was right or not.

(It was also tbh better having the second-string pundits at half-time, rather than the smuggery of Lineker and co!)

I had picture in picture to swap over for any goals. It seemed to me that Nigeria possibly should have one, especially with that miss from Yakubu. However it was a bit weird with Garth Crooks saying how dominant the Nigerians were. I didn't get that impression from the little I saw.

Mm, I didn't really buy that either. They had some very nice passing movements, but not much concerted pressure. South Korea deserved to go through on the basis of their organization and teamwork: they may have a shout against Uruguay, if they can keep Forlan and Suarez fairly quiet.

I fail to understand how Garth Crooks keeps his job. He never says anything remotely interesting or informative, and spends an inordinate amount of time and verbiage not doing so. He's also a useless interviewer.
