Cute attack

One for davidt3001.

The Powerpuff girls Beijing Olympic mascots are in London. They are called Bei Bei, Jing Jing, Huan Huan, Ying Ying and Ni Ni - which, together, reads in Chinese: 'Beijing welcomes you!'

There is an annual Mascot Grand National but I think they should have an Olympics too.

That's more than kind. I think Wushok still wins overall, though

Oh, the Five Friendlies (since renamed to the Fuwa - Beijing claims this was to avoid confusion with friendly football matches and not because everyone said the name was terrible).

They pale into insignificance next to Funiu Lele, the multi-coloured cow who is the mascot for the Paralympics. Frankly they're a bit lame (a panda, OK; tibetan antelope, political but OK; a swallow... that looks like a panda to me; a fish... a fish?; and, er, flame) and they're also a big slap in the face to the population of China who seem conveniently to have forgotten how China Mobile and their own Olympic Committee ripped them off. There was a big phone vote for what the Olympic mascot should be - about 5 yuan a vote, I think, which is not be money for you or I but, you know, you can buy a packet of crisps with it. Millions of people send in their choice for which of the final five (you can see where this is going) they prefer.

The day of the final tally arrives. Oh how brilliant! They've decided to use ALL FIVE! Brilliant! They just totally took your money via the medium of telephony!

It helps that five mascots means five times as many rucksacks, stuffed toys, keyrings and so on to sell, too.

chilledchimp found a web page for Funiu Lele which goes through the reasons for chosing a cow logo. One is that cows are accepted internationally!

I... what?
Cows have a never-say-die spirit? Have these people ever seen a cow?

I also like this - "Therefore, adopting cows as the mascot of the Paralympic Games, instead of traditional rare animals, is a creative act in terms of design to a certain extent."

To a certain extent. Heh.

I think the bottom line is that no one else has used a cow before so the marketing opportunities are greater.

I wonder which underused fauna will be the mascot of the next World Cup? The Springbok is the national animal of South Africa but rugby already use that and besides antelope and their derivatives are just too common. Maybe they should go with the Cape Pangolin because it can roll up like a football:
